DR. MUSTAPHA IMMURANA is a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Health Research, University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS). He also teaches postgraduate students at the Fred N. Binka School of Public Health, UHAS.
Education
Dr. Immurana obtained both his BA and MPhil Economics degrees from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Ghana, and later obtained a PhD in Economics (Health Economics Specialization) from Mangalore University, India. Dr. Immurana has obtained certificates in Economic Evaluation in Global Health, Project Management in Global Health, Policy Development and Advocacy for Global Health, Leadership and Management in Health, as well as Monitoring and Evaluation in Global Health, all from the University of Washington, USA. He also has a certificate in Research Methodology awarded by the Department of Social Work, Mangalore University, India, in collaboration with the Indian Council for Social Science Research (ICSSR). In addition, Dr. Immurana has obtained a certificate in Implementation Research with a focus on Infectious Diseases of Poverty awarded by the World Health Organization Special Program for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (WHO-TDR) and the University of Ghana School of Public Health.
Work experience with other Institutions
Dr. Immurana has worked as a facilitator/resource person in training postgraduate students on how to use statistical software for data analyses at the Institute of Distance Learning (IDL), KNUST. He has also supervised more than 11 postgraduate students under the MSc/MPhil Industrial Finance and Investment Program at IDL, KNUST. He was an adjunct/part-time lecturer at the University of Education, Winneba (Kumasi-Campus, currently Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development), Ghana Technology University College (Kumasi-Campus, currently Ghana Communication Technology University (Kumasi-Campus)) and Christ Apostolic University College, Kumasi-Ghana.

Dr. Immurana is an Academic Editor of PLOS ONE (Health Economics Section) and an Editorial Board Member of BMC Public Health (Health Economics and Outcomes Research Section). He has reviewed papers for reputable journals such as The Lancet Global Health, PLOS One, BMJ Open, Archives of Public Health, Environmental Health Insights, International Journal of Social Economics, Quality & Quantity, African Development Review, International Journal of Finance and Economics, Economies, and Transnational Corporations Review.
Dr. Immurana is a collaborator of the Global Burden of Diseases Study (GBD), conducted by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, University of Washington, USA and funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He is also a member of the International Health Economics Association and its associated subgroups (Financing for Universal Health Coverage Group, Economics of Children's Health & Wellbeing Group, Mental Health Economics Group, Economics of Obesity Group, Immunization Economics Group and the Health Systems’ Efficiency Group).
Research Interests
Dr. Immurana’s current research interests are in the areas of Fiscal Policies for Health (Tobacco, Alcohol and Sugar-sweetened Foods Taxation), Globalization (Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), Trade, Migration) and Population Health, Macroeconomics and Health, Financial Inclusion and Population Health, Financial Inclusion and Access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Health Metrics, Non-Communicable Diseases, Neglected Tropical Diseases, Economic Burden of Diseases and Cost Effectiveness Analysis.
Grants and Consultancies
Dr. Immurana has been a Principal Investigator or Co-investigator on projects funded by the Global Institute for Disease Elimination, Grand Challenges Canada, the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene and the National Institute for Health Research, and the WHO. He has also Co-consulted for the NCD Alliance’s Advocacy Institute’s NCD Prevention Accelerator Program in Partnership with the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) through the Ghana Non-Communicable Diseases Alliance (GhNCDA), the Vision for Alternative Development (VALD), Ghana and Deanship of Scientific Research (DSR) at King Abdulaziz University, Saudi Arabia.
